Did you know – why do we need vitamins and minerals?

Every human is a complex biochemical organism that needs nutrients to function properly. Vitamins and minerals are essential elements that enable (or participate in or indirectly enable) every chemical reaction in our bodies. A good example is zinc, which controls more than 200 enzymes and plays a key role in the immune system, and is also involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, nucleic acids and other micronutrients. It is also involved in cell division, DNA synthesis, tissue repair and wound healing. Without magnesium, we would have no energy, our muscles would be in a constant state of contraction and we would not have to adjust our blood cholesterol levels. And these are just two of the many minerals and vitamins we need for our bodies to function properly.

Vitamins and minerals

Vitamin A plays a role in iron metabolism, contributes to the maintenance of healthy mucous membranes, contributes to the maintenance of healthy skin, and plays a role in the maintenance of vision and the functioning of the immune system.
Vitamin C contributes to the release of metabolic energy, the functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological functioning, plays a role in the functioning of the immune system, increases iron absorption and helps to reduce fatigue and tiredness.

Vitamin D contributes to the normal use of calcium and phosphorus, contributes to normal blood calcium levels, helps maintain healthy bones and teeth, contributes to muscle function and immune function.
Thiamine (B1) contributes to the release of energy for metabolism, the functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological functioning. It plays a role in heart function.
Riboflavin (B2) plays a role in the maintenance of normal red blood cells, contributes to the release of energy in metabolism and to the functioning of the nervous system, and in the maintenance of healthy skin.
Niacin contributes to the reduction of fatigue and exhaustion and to normal psychological functioning.
Vitamin B6 plays a role in hormone regulation, red blood cell formation, protein and glycogen metabolism and cysteine synthesis.
Folate contributes to the development of maternal tissue during pregnancy, contributes to the synthesis of amino acids and blood formation, and contributes to normal psychological functioning.
Vitamin B12 plays a role in cell division and immune function. Biotin contributes to the metabolism of macronutrients and to the maintenance of healthy hair, mucous membranes and skin.

Pantothenic acid plays a role in the synthesis and metabolism of steroid hormones, vitamin D and some neurotransmitters, and contributes to mental performance.

Iron plays a role in cognitive function, contributes to the release of energy in metabolism, plays a role in the formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, and in the transport of oxygen in the body.
Zinc plays a role in the metabolism of acids and bases and carbohydrates. It also plays a role in DNA synthesis, fertility and reproduction. It contributes to the maintenance of healthy hair, bones, nails and skin. It also plays a role in the preservation of vision, the protection of cells against oxidative stress and the functioning of the immune system.
Selenium plays a role in the formation of sperm cells and thyroid function.

Copper contributes to the maintenance of normal connective tissue. It contributes to the functioning of the nervous system and to the normal colouring of hair and skin.
Molybdenum plays a role in the metabolism of sulphur-containing amino acids. Chromium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels.
